The Wonderland Dreams Exhibit

Wonderland Dreams by Alexa Meade was an immersive art exhibit that took over a 26,000 sq ft former Best Buy on Fifth Avenue in NYC.

With over 30 art installations and hundreds of hand-painted costumes and props, guests could step inside of a painting and become a work of art. The exhibit was filled with spaces for people to express their own creativity.

Over 100,000 guests came to Wonderland Dreams during its year-long run.

"Meade similarly invites her audiences to engage performatively, choosing from multitudes of props and hand-painted jackets, coats, and hats, that paint us into her canvas.’

‘It’s a dynamic work of art that evolves as we gasp and giggle into newly awakened consciousness… drawing us into her creative imagination.”

Explore Over 30 Art Installations

No matter which way you look, you discover something new, and every part of the space is important — even the ground you walk on.

Whether it's a warped chessboard or a ginormous deck of 52 cards that you can climb on and stack until you hit the ceiling, you will find yourself swimming in art.

  • Depth and scale dramatically shifted from tiny houses to a larger-than-life Queen of Hearts Throne, and guests engaged with the Mad Hatter’s tea party to giant playing cards, color changing mushrooms and secret rose gardens.

Everything around you continues to shift and change as you discover hidden details, like arrows that change direction, mushrooms that say “Eat Me,” or flowers that change shape depending on how the light shines. It’s as though the walls are breathing with these optical illusions and color-changing lights.

You could create your own constellations with glow-in-the-dark magnets, adding a touch of the cosmos to the exhibit.

Enter Dancing Spandex, a world brought to life in collaboration with Aza Raskin. Here, you are given a pair of magical diffraction glasses, and when you put them on and run through a maze of neon spandex fabric hanging from the ceiling, everything gets turned into a psychedelic rainbow. You could stay here for hours in this world of color and never want to leave.

A painted baby grand piano was available for everyone to play, regardless of musical ability, adding a harmonious layer to the artistic experience.

Spaces for Guests to Make Art in Wonderland Dreams

In the Painting Garden, you could literally paint the roses red—or any color you wanted and add it to a wall adorned with hundreds of others. Like a community garden, but made entirely of art.

In the exhibit’s Wine Bar & Café, you can grab a paintbrush and create your own masterpieces on canvas. You could even paint on your own face or your friend’s, if you felt so inspired!

In the Graffiti Alley, you could leave your mark by posting notes on the walls. Surrounding you were millions of hopes, dreams, and doodles of guests. If you looked closely, you might have even found a marriage proposal!

Special Events

Wonderland Dreams quickly became the go-to spot for throwing creative parties in NYC. There were Broadway nights, stand up comedy showcases, film screenings, concerts, and fashion shows. Live model drawing sessions, poetry performances, and swing dancing lessons were all in the mix. Tiktok took over Wonderland Dreams for their corporate holiday party, turning the exhibit into a massive dance hall. And, of course, there were hundreds of birthday parties, too!

Kids' Play Time

Every Saturday morning, Wonderland Dreams produced The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, a special program geared towards kids. Children were entertained with magic shows, dance lessons, arts & crafts, and sing-a-longs led by a live band.
